Call the new user account something like "Visitor". Like XP and all other modern operating systems, Vista and Windows 7 are multi-user operating systems with built-in system accounts such as Administrator, Default, All Users, and Guest. These accounts should be left alone as they are part of the operating system structure.

You particularly don't want only one user account with administrative privileges on Vista and Windows 7 because the built-in Administrator account normally only used in emergencies is disabled by default. If you're running as Administrator for your daily work and that account gets corrupted, things will be Difficult. It isn't impossible to activate the built-in Administrator to rescue things, but it will require third-party tools and working outside the operating system.

The user account that is for your daily work should be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user call it something like "CompAdmin" or "Tech" or the like only there for elevation purposes.

After you create "CompAdmin", log into it and change your regular user account to Standard. Then log back into your regular account. Select a user account to automatically log on by clicking on the desired account to highlight it and then hit OK. Tuesday, January 5, AM. Well, normally you'd want the best of both.

But if you got a GOOD hardware firewall then that's good. But this might be overkill for you but others might like it. Now click Yes to the confirmation message. Hi, I had been through the process you descibe many many times. Interestingly, I found out by accident, you can type any text in the username box, leave password box blank and it will then grant access each and every time untill the XP machine is re-booted, then it would prompt for username and password again.

I really wish there was a simple file share mode on Win 7. It all seems far to complicated to me. Now I just need to figure why my Freecom media player wont see Win 7 shares.

I may well end up going back to XP. Tuesday, January 5, PM. I have same issue since upgrading my file server from xp to win 7. Several xp comps now access win 7 shares - all on same workgroup. Added a Share login ID to win 7 and configed xp comps to "reconnect at logon" and "connect using a different user name" using the win 7 Share login id.

The shares map fine but keep prompting for login info after reboots. Did not have that behavior when file server was xp. Once mapped, they used the id and password specified during the original mapping. How do I get same behavior with my win 7 file server? Saturday, January 30, PM.
